In this listening practice, Julie Funk (University of Victoria) will introduce Literary Machine Listening (LML) as a pedagogical technique for the literary analysis of sound. LML offers a generative series of prompts inspired by machine learning processes such as computational audition, and more specifically, audio classifiers.
This technique embraces ‘paper computing’ pedagogies – no prior programming experience or knowledge of machine learning algorithms required! Just bring a pen and paper to take notes as we listen!
For this session, we’ll be listening to a selection of Samuel Beckett’s Krapp’s Last Tape performed by Donald Davis (Provincetown Playhouse 1960).
The Literary Machine Listening practice will take place via Zoom on February 24, 2021. Julie will be guiding this virtual listening practice as an uninvited guest on the traditional territories of the Lekwungen Nation which includes the Songhees, Esquimalt and W̱SÁNEĆ peoples.
